Position title:             Habitat Stewardship Biologist                                                                                             

Department:              Sts’ailes Development Corporation

Salary Range:            $65,000 – $85,000 Annually commensurate with experience

 

Summary of Responsibilities

This position is responsible for supporting and assisting the Fisheries Manager in the design, operation and reporting of fisheries projects involving both Sts’ailes and Sq’éwlets communities.  It is paramount the biologist ensures the conservation and stewardship of local salmon stocks.  The primary focus is on fish habitat restoration and stewardship, including stock assessment, management of local salmon stocks and community fisheries as required. The job involves the application of sound scientific principles in all projects, contract development and management and ensuring accountable and timely completion of fisheries projects.  Capacity building amongst fisheries staff while conducting projects will be very important. This position will be responsible for oversight of project field operations, research and scientific liaison with fisheries agencies, and working groups.

 

Scope of the Position

The Habitat Stewardship Biologist must work collegially with the Fisheries Manager, all related departments and staff, Sts’ailes and Sq’éwlets committees, management working groups, special interest groups and businesses to ensuring healthy and productive ecosystems and sustainable fisheries. This position will consider both traditional ecological knowledge and scientific data, and may be required to provide information, advice and recommendations to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Provincial and territorial agencies, Aboriginal organizations, including the general public to achieve this outcome.

 

Qualifications and Competencies

  1. Must have a minimum BSc degree and 2 years’ experience in fisheries habitat and stewardship or a related field.
  2. A thorough knowledge of the theories, principles and practices within Fisheries biology and ecology sufficient to plan and conduct scientific projects, direct activities of subordinate staff, and to provide authoritative scientific information, advice and recommendations.
  3. Experience with scientific sampling theory and techniques – population sampling and enumeration (electrofishing, beach seining, gill netting, mark-recapture/dead-pitch, minnow trapping, etc), and identification to determine presence/absence, abundance and carrying capacity of fish habitats.
  4. Experience with fish habitat restoration design and implementation in river and wetlands.
  5. Familiarity with riparian and instream work regulations and policy and a background knowledge in the BC Environmental Assessment Process is an asset.
  6. Experience and education in technical writing and oral communication skills.
  7. Ability to work unsupervised with organizational, time management and presentation skills.
  8. Accomplished in developing successful proposals or funding partnership arrangements.
  9. Experience in working with First Nations.
  10. A reliable vehicle and a valid BC Driver’s License.
  11. Certified in SVOP, MEDA 3, Swiftwater Rescue and experience in operating watercraft is an asset.
  12. Flexible work hours/willingness to work evenings and weekends when required.
  13. Will require strength and endurance for field activities in all types of weather.
  14. Must possess laboratory skills.
