Aquaculture Technician Diploma Program

Description:

Get the training you need to become an integral part of the growing aquaculture industry and work in Vancouver Island’s coastal wilderness. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to: Demonstrate basic computer skills for communications and reporting purposes on the job; Perform daily operations of hatchery work including farm work; Identify and recognize safety protocol and standard operating procedures within the industry; Operate equipment with industry certifications

Aquaculture Technician Program Description:

NIC’s Aquaculture Technician certificate provides you with in-demand skills to support aquatic food production for marine, freshwater and land-based systems. Hatchery Operations Certificate Description:

The program curriculum focuses on hatchery operations with a specialization in fish culture. The concept of fish enhancement program will be introduced including important knowledge about aquatic ecology in relation to fish stock enhancement. The curriculum includes technical aspects of fish hatchery production, with a primary focus on healthy fish development and seedling production critical to stock enhancement for improved conservation. You’ll also learn identification of different species of fish, familiarization of the external and internal fish anatomy, life cycle and migration, important reproductive physiology and osmoregulatory function.

Shellfish Aquaculture Technician certificate

Description:

NIC’s Shellfish Aquaculture Technician certificate provides you with in-demand skills to support aquatic food production for marine, freshwater and land-based systems. This includes the production of various species of oyster, mussel, clam, cockles, geoduck, abalone, seaweeds, microalgae, as well as upcoming species such as sea cucumbers, urchins, prawn/shrimp, crab, and crayfish. Curriculum includes technical aspects of production, with a primary focus on hatchery and juvenile rearing, culture in on-growing systems, biosecurity, post-harvest processing and marketing.

Careers:

After completing the certificate program, you will qualify for positions such as fisheries field technician, shellfish culturist, aquarist, shellfish hatchery technician/manager, shellfish stock enhancement and assessment technician, algologist or algal technician, shellfish health technician, research assistant and fish laboratory technician. Description:

The Applied Coastal Ecology (ACE) program readies students for careers in coastal natural resources management, ecosystem restoration, environmental monitoring, and many others. Fisheries Observer Training

Description:

Observer training courses prepare students for employment as catch monitors, biological samplers or both, and guide them through the Observer certification process. There are two different types of Observer Training Courses: an 11-day comprehensive course designed to give students a solid foundation in fisheries monitoring and management and a 3-day fishery-specific training module designed to qualify students for employment as fishery Observers.

First Nations Guardian Watchmen, Resource Management Staff, DFO Staff, First Nations Fisheries Technicians. DFO requires a number of other certifications as a condition of employment. These certifications are not offered by our courses, but we can help students apply for them.

Description:

Description:

Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) is an aquatic biological monitoring program led and funded by Environment & Climate Change Canada for assessing the heath of freshwater ecosystems. Online course consisting of up to 6 theoretical modules about the program and use of the online tools. Depending on the interest and responsibilities of users, each module was designed for a specific purpose and different modules are required for different levels of CABIN access.

Description:

The Applied Ecology and Conservation (AEC) program provides students with the employment skills needed for work as conservation field technicians The program is based on a core of university studies courses that allow students the option of exiting with a Certificate after completion of one year, continuing to the two-year Diploma or transferring into a Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor degree program in Biology, Environmental Science, and Geography at other post-secondary institutions in British Columbia and elsewhere.

Description:

Description:

The First Nations principles of OCAP® establish how First Nations’ data and information will be collected, protected, used, or shared. Standing for ownership, control, access and possession, OCAP® is a tool to support strong information governance on the path to First Nations data sovereignty. Given the diversity within and across Nations, the principles will be expressed and asserted in line with a Nation’s respective world view, traditional knowledge, and protocols.
